I took this photo out our kitchen window at lunchtime. This little woodpecker was enjoying his free meal at our suet feeder. We've had to move this feeder several times because the squirrels keep finding ways to get to it. At one point we had it hanging on a thin branch and the squirrels would hang upside down by their tail in order to reach it (see below). Now we have the feeder hanging off the overhang right outside our kitchen window. I'm glad the woodpecker has found it and I'm pretty sure we've now foiled the squirrels!
This photo was taken a few weeks ago before we moved the suet feeder!
love it! I had similar experiences with squirrels. The only thing that worked was like you did, hanging from the gutters/overhang. :) Good Pics!
ReplyDeleteThe woodpecker has some similar markings on it's feathers as the Kookaburra does but it is the wrong hemisphere!
ReplyDeleteWhat goes into your suet feeder?
Ali, We buy the woodpecker suet prepackaged. This one has cracked corn, peanuts, raisins, almonds and a few other goodies held together with beef suet.
